The Federal Government (FG) has officially declared Wednesday, October 1, 2025, as a public holiday in commemoration of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary. This declaration comes as part of the country’s long-standing tradition of observing the day Nigeria gained independence from colonial rule in 1960.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government. He extended his warm congratulations to all Nigerians, both at home and in the diaspora, for witnessing another milestone in the nation’s history. According to the minister, Independence Day is not just a time for celebration but also a moment for reflection, unity, and renewed commitment to national progress.

Call for Unity, Patriotism, and Resilience

In a statement signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, Dr. Tunji-Ojo urged Nigerians to continue upholding the values of patriotism, unity, and resilience that have sustained the country for over six decades. He noted that despite numerous challenges, Nigeria has continued to stand tall as a nation of great potential and diverse cultural heritage.

The statement read in part: “The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, October 1, 2025, as a public holiday to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary. The Honourable Minister of Interior, Hon (Dr) Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government, congratulates all Nigerians, both at home and abroad, on this historic occasion.”

Dr. Tunji-Ojo also enjoined Nigerians to keep faith in the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR), stressing that the administration remains committed to national rebirth, economic transformation, and inclusive prosperity. He emphasized that through collective effort and unity of purpose, the country can overcome its challenges and achieve sustainable development.

Encouragement for National Growth

The minister further highlighted the importance of collaboration between government and citizens, noting that no meaningful progress can be achieved without the active participation of Nigerians in the growth and rebuilding process of the nation. He expressed optimism that Nigeria’s democracy, economy, and unity will continue to be strengthened through perseverance and dedication to shared values.

“He urged Nigerians to further keep faith in the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which is anchored on national rebirth, economic transformation, and collective prosperity. The Minister expressed confidence that, with the cooperation of all Nigerians, the country will continue to grow stronger in peace, progress, and development,” the statement added.

Hope for Continued Peace and Prosperity

Finally, Dr. Tunji-Ojo wished every Nigerian a joyful and memorable 65th Independence Day celebration. He expressed hope that this year’s anniversary would inspire renewed patriotism, deepen unity across ethnic and religious divides, and encourage citizens to work together for a stronger and more prosperous Nigeria.

He concluded with a call to action: “Let us celebrate not just our past victories, but also our future possibilities as a nation destined for greatness.”
