The Federal Government (FG) has officially announced the cancellation of the Independence Anniversary parade which was earlier scheduled to take place on Wednesday, October 1, 2025. The parade was meant to be one of the major highlights of activities lined up to commemorate Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day celebrations across the country. This development has generated mixed reactions among citizens, especially given the historical significance of Independence Day parades as a symbol of national unity and pride.

The announcement regarding the cancellation was contained in a detailed statement released on Monday by Segun Imohiosen, the Director of Information and Public Relations at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF). In the statement, the Federal Government explained that while the parade would not hold, other commemorative activities that had been planned to mark the special anniversary would proceed as scheduled. The government reassured Nigerians that this adjustment would not in any way water down the importance of the milestone celebration.

Parade Cancellation Not a Setback

Although no specific reason was provided for the decision, the Federal Government emphasized that the parade cancellation “is in no way a diminishment of the significance of this milestone anniversary.” The statement underlined that the cancellation should not be interpreted as a lack of appreciation for the nation’s progress over the past 65 years but rather as an adjustment in how the celebration would be carried out this year. It further noted that Independence Day remains a sacred occasion for reflection, gratitude, and renewed commitment to national growth and unity.

The government reassured Nigerians that it remains fully committed to celebrating the 65th Independence anniversary “with dignity, honor, and enthusiasm.” It added that all other scheduled programmes such as the presidential broadcast, special interdenominational prayers, cultural displays, lectures, and commemorative events would go ahead as planned without disruption. Nigerians were encouraged to participate in these events and uphold the spirit of patriotism that the day represents.

“The Federal Government wishes to announce the cancellation of the Independence Anniversary parade, previously scheduled to mark the 65th Independence on Wednesday, 1st October. The cancellation is in no way a diminishment of the significance of this milestone anniversary, and the government remains committed to celebrating Nigeria’s 65th year of independence with dignity and enthusiasm,” the statement read in part.

Call for Support and Cooperation

In the concluding part of the statement, the Federal Government expressed regret over any inconvenience the decision may cause to Nigerians, dignitaries, invited guests, and members of the diplomatic community. The government called on all citizens to show understanding and demonstrate collective support for the reforms and transformation agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. The statement emphasized that the administration is determined to build a greater and stronger Nigeria, and this requires the cooperation of every stakeholder.

“The Federal Government appreciates the understanding, support and cooperation of all Nigerians, members of the diplomatic community, and invited guests, and urges Nigerians to support the reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, in making Nigeria a greater nation,” the statement concluded.

It will be recalled that just a few days earlier, the Federal Government had declared Wednesday, October 1, 2025, as a public holiday in honor of Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary. This declaration still stands, allowing Nigerians across the country to reflect on the nation’s journey since 1960 and look forward to a future of peace, unity, and prosperity.
