Lagos State’s National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) chairman, Mustapha Adekunle, popularly known as Sego, has sparked a major wave of criticism and public outrage following a bold declaration that has quickly gone viral online. In a recent video, Sego openly vowed to deal with anyone who dares to oppose or refuse to vote for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming 2027 general elections.
The clip, which has been widely circulated across social media platforms, shows Sego speaking with unflinching confidence as he claimed that the APC remains the only legitimate political force in Lagos State. According to him, every other political group is “fake” and should never be taken seriously. He stressed that what happened in 2023 — when APC shockingly lost Lagos in the presidential election — would never be allowed to repeat itself in 2027.
In his own words, Sego declared:
“APC is our party in Lagos State. Another party is a counterfeit, whether you like it or not.”
This statement, perceived by many as a direct threat to voters’ rights, has triggered heated discussions online, with critics warning that it amounts to outright political intimidation. The suggestion that over 20 million Lagos residents could be coerced into supporting one party has raised concerns about the state of democracy and electoral freedom in Nigeria.
Public reactions have been swift and divided. While some argue that Sego’s words were specifically directed at NURTW members under his leadership, others insist that the speech reflects a dangerous precedent of political interference by transport union leaders in Lagos politics. Several Nigerians have demanded that security agencies immediately investigate the matter to prevent voter suppression ahead of the 2027 polls.
Political analysts also note that the NURTW has historically wielded significant influence during elections in Lagos, often accused of being used as a tool for mobilization and intimidation. Sego’s comments, therefore, have reignited fears of violence, manipulation, and lack of transparency in the electoral process.
The viral video continues to trend as Nigerians debate the implications of such rhetoric. Many citizens are calling for stronger institutions, accountability, and firm assurances that voters in 2027 will have the freedom to choose their leaders without intimidation or coercion from political figures or union leaders.
