A young Nigerian man has sparked heated debate online after openly criticizing landlords in Asaba, Delta State, over what he described as outrageous and unrealistic house rents that ordinary citizens cannot afford.
In a now-viral video making rounds on social media platforms, the man passionately voiced his frustration, accusing landlords of intentionally setting rent prices so high that only internet fraudsters, popularly called yahoo boys, can comfortably afford them.
He began his rant with a direct question that immediately grabbed attention: “Asaba landlords, how you go put 2-bedroom flat for ₦2.5 million, ₦3 million, and you go open mouth say you no want yahoo boy?”
Visibly upset, he went further to question the reasoning of such landlords, even asking if they were “mentally okay.” According to him, the average Nigerian who works a legitimate job cannot reasonably be expected to pay as much as ₦3 million for house rent.
He went on to highlight the economic realities in the country, questioning how much the federal and state governments are even paying as minimum wage. He wondered how a civil servant earning modest monthly pay could possibly afford to rent a two-bedroom flat at such high costs without engaging in fraudulent activities.
In his argument, he emphasized that no ordinary worker or genuine hustler in Asaba could raise such money without extreme financial strain. He added that these landlords are fully aware of the implications of their pricing but still go ahead to pretend they don’t want yahoo boys as tenants.
According to him, the landlords are deliberately building and fixing such exorbitant rent prices for a specific type of clientele — internet fraudsters and flashy spenders — while ordinary citizens are pushed aside and made to struggle.
His outburst has since gone viral and attracted massive reactions online. Many Nigerians flooded the comment section of the post, echoing his sentiments and lamenting the high cost of housing not only in Asaba but also in several other Nigerian cities like Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt, where rents continue to skyrocket beyond the reach of the average man.
Some agreed strongly with his position, saying that landlords who charge millions for basic two-bedroom apartments are indirectly encouraging fraud because they know that only yahoo boys can afford such luxury. Others, however, argued that construction costs, inflation, and the rising price of building materials also play a role in the soaring rent prices.
Regardless of the divided opinions, the man’s statement has thrown light on an ongoing national issue — the widening gap between income levels and the rising cost of living in Nigeria, particularly the skyrocketing prices of decent housing that are fast becoming a luxury for only the wealthy and dubious.
